"Making Disciples...Making a Difference"

At Kearney First UMC we exist to lead people to an active faith in Jesus Christ.  We believe that we're called to make a real difference in the world by engaging hands and hearts in service to others in the name of Christ.

For that reason, we're very intentional in offering many varied opportunities for people to connect through ministries of outreach, missions and service.  We have a four-pronged approach which focuses on opportunities locally, statewide, nationally and internationally.  Here are a few of the opportunities to serve.

Locally...

Community "Mission Blitz" - Annually we sponsor a "Mission Blitz" where our entire church family engages in a wide variety of "hands on" service projects and random acts of generosity and hospitality to meet the needs of people in our local community.

Good Samaritan Center - We have developed a vital relationship with the Good Samaritan Center in Excelsior Springs.  This ministry serves the needs of people in Ray and Clay counties.  We offer financial assistance and other donations (furnishings, clothes, small appliances, etc.) throughout the year.  The center is always in need of both donations and volunteers who are willing to aid them in their ongoing work with people in need.

Salvation Army - Each year during the Christmas season our church family is involved in partnering with the Salvation Army in their work and ministry.  Church members volunteer to help ring bells at a local merchant.  This fund-raising effort is important to the Salvation Army and the monies collected are the life-blood for their year-round efforts.

Food Pantry - We support a local food pantry that serves the needs of area families.  Food donations come from the generosity of our church members and constituents and our Missions Team keeps the pantry adequately stocked.  Every first Sunday (Communion Sunday) we observe what we call First Feast wherein church members are encouraged to deposit food donations in the collection bin in our Sonshine Hall.

Local Assistance - We have a benevolence fund that we utilize to provide assistance (utilities, medicine, etc.) to local families.  We have some budgeted funds and occasionally receive special donations to this account from people in our congregation.

Various Area Ministries - We support a wide variety of area ministries.  A few examples:  Spofford House, Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehab Center, Project Warmth, Synergy Services Family Care, Harvesters.

Statewide...

Festival of Sharing - We collect items (flood buckets, prison kits, school kits, personal hygiene kits, blankets, etc.) and monies for this statewide gathering.  These donations are then distributed to agencies that serve the needs of people throughout the state of Missouri.

Disaster Relief/Volunteer in Missions Trips - Each year we usually target one or two specific areas within our state that are in need of volunteer mission help.  Recent examples:  Trips to Caruthersville and Kennett, Missouri to help with relief and rebuilding efforts following a devastating tornado and destructive ice storm.  Mission trip to Sikeston, Missouri to help work on the facilities of Freedom House.

Nationally...

College Age Mission Trip - Each year at the beginning of the Summer break, we offer a college age mission trip to connect students with opportunities to do hands-on mission work.

Adult Mission Trips - Each year we offer an opportunity to serve beyond the boundaries of Missouri by  connecting with a hands-on mission opportunity.  An example is the Gulf Coast Mission Trip in which participants helped with Hurricane rebuilding efforts.

Youth Mission Trips - Our youth group also participates regularly in Volunteer in Mission projects.  A recent example is the Youth Mission Trips to Fairbanks, Alaska and Oakville, Iowa and a planned trip to Gore, Oklahoma.

Internationally...

Mozambique Covenant - Our local church is involved in a covenant relationship with the Betula United Methodist Church in Mozambique.  We offer annual support that helps pay the salary and benefits for the pastor serving this congregation.  We have also offered generous support for the purpose of digging fresh water wells in that country.

International Mission Trips - We offer opportunities for involvement with hands-on mission work outside the boundaries of the United States.  The trips offer the chance to connect and serve with people from varying cultures.  The relationships that are built are at least as valuable as the actual work being done.  Recent examples: Mission trips to Corozal and Libertad, Belize, Dundee Pen, Jamaica, Mexico, and Cairo Egypt.
